Jane Austen died on July 18, 1817, at the age of 41. We invite you to post a tribute in the Memorial Book in celebration of her life and work and in commemoration of the bicentenary of her death.

The Jane Austen Society of North America is dedicated to the enjoyment and appreciation of Jane Austen and her writing. JASNA is a nonprofit organization, staffed by volunteers, whose mission is to foster among the widest number of readers the study, appreciation, and understanding of Jane Austen’s works, her life, and her genius. We have over 5,000 members of all ages and from diverse walks of life. Although most live in the United States or Canada, we also have members in more than a dozen other countries.

I am but a novice in a Jane Austen Book Club with a very learned group. I have rediscovered her works through new understanding thanks to our great discussions. My favorite part of her works are the subtle way she takes political stands on issues through her novels in an era when. women had few rights let alone given any voice in social standings. Perhaps the greatest mind in literature!

To dear Jane who has provided untold pleasure, laughter, and joy to countless people the world over. I treasure the memory of spending time in the small home in Winchester where you spent your last days. I could almost feel your spirit lingering there. But, most of all, I treasure your writings. Rest in peace, dear Jane.

Dear Jane,
Thank you for making comedy look easy, and all the resulting laughter. When I think of you I remember, "She had a lively playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous." I have delighted in your writing since I was fourteen, and first started reading your books.

I prefer to remember Jane's birth date, rather than the day of her death. My precious granddaughter shares her birthday, and I constantly remind her of that special day. Writers like Jane Austen come along infrequently, and we should all be cognizant of the special days in her too short life.

Not everyone "gets" Jane Austen, but for many she has an infinite appeal, a power to captivate, and a depth of meaning. Her existence as a writer marked a quiet revolution, both societal and literary and unapparent in her day, that has been unveiled over time and underlies the continual exponentiation of her appeal. RIP Jane.
