Miss Austen and the English Country House

NY Metro January 2025

The New York Metropolitan Region will hold an in-person meeting featuring art and architectural historian Curt DiCamillo, curator of fine art at the New EnglandHistoric Genealogical Society and an internationally recognized authority on the British country house. Since 1999 he has maintained an award-winning database on the web which seeks to document every English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish country house ever built, standing or demolished.

Regarding Austen, he writes: "Perhaps no novelist inspired the idealized vision of the English country house more than Jane Austen. Through her sublime writing we are left with romantic images of great houses set in gorgeous landscapes. The reality is that Jane Austen herself visited many of the great houses of England and used them as models in almost all of her books. This lecture will examine country houses that inspired Jane and left us with a fanciful world of English rural beauty unequaled in literature."

The event is no longer sold out! A larger space at the same venue has been procured.
