Topic: Jane Austen's Novels: Still Relevant after 200 Years?
In a formal debate, both sides of a “resolution” are presented. For this year's contest, students were asked to debate both sides of the following statement in their essays: Resolved, that Jane Austen’s novels are still relevant and speak to us after 200 years. In the first part of the essay, they were instructed to attack this claim and in the second part defend it. High school students were required to cite at least one novel; undergraduate and graduate students were expected to cite at least two.
